|21 Cordiner’s Land is a delightful recently upgraded 2 Bedroom Four Star apartment, with superb Castle views, in a most desirable location! It is within the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town World Heritage Site Area, just below the Castle, in the historic West Port (the ancient "Flodden Wall" gateway to the Old Town), off the Grassmarket.
Edinburgh’s main attractions are within a few minutes’ walk: Princes Street and Gardens, Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, the Grassmarket, The Edinburgh International Conference Centre, major theatres, galleries, museums, cinemas, pubs, clubs, shops and richly varied restaurants are all very close. (The Usher Hall, the Traverse, Lyceum and King's Theatres are all in the immediate vicinity.) The location of the property is ideal for visitors who want to stay right in the city centre. It is an easy and very pleasant walk to all the attractions.
THE AREA: This famous area’s infamous past is linked to many significant historical events including public executions, which took place at the east end of the Grassmarket, and the notorious activities of Burke and Hare in the West Port. These days though, the Grassmarket is a popularly fashionable area, which offers a wide variety of interests for tourists including specialty shops (try the wonderful cheese shop Mellis), antiquarian bookshops, antiquarian map shops, fashion, antiques, bric-a-brac and an abundant choice of dining, from sidewalk cafes and pubs to formal Scottish restaurants, all enhancing enjoyment of the long Scottish twilights. Explore, relax and enjoy this marvellous area, basking under the protection of Edinburgh Castle. It is also a centre of activity during Edinburgh's famous festival periods.
THE APARTMENT: 21 Cordiner’s Land is a unique historic apartment, modernly refurbished to suit the needs of discerning travellers. It provides accommodation for up to 4 guests, but is also very comfortable for a couple or single traveller. It has one bedroom with KING bed (5'x6'3"); a second bedroom with quality bunk beds with full size single bed on top and 4' double bed below; living room with double sofa-bed and including open-plan kitchen and dining table area; and modern bathroom with power shower over the full size bath. An extensive range of facilities are provided including TWO Digital Widescreen TVs, DVD player (with complimentary movies), Hi-Fi/CD player, books, and well stocked tourist information folders! The kitchen is fully equipped with quality kitchenware & appliances, including a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer (these are not coin operated appliances). All linens and towels are provided. The property has been recently refurbished to exacting standards, maintaining a tastefully decorative style throughout, and providing a welcoming 'home away from home' atmosphere.
THE POSITION: This apartment has the advantage of being located in the rear section of Cordiner’s Land, on the third floor, away from the noise of the city’s activities. It enjoys tranquility and a secluded ambiance, with a very impressive outlook over the surrounding area and the Cordiner’s Land private terraced courtyard gardens.
THE BUILDING: Cordiner's Land is an historic Listed Building, of importance to Scotland’s heritage. Above the front entrance there is an ancient reinstated stone with the emblem of the Cordiners (who were shoemakers and cobblers), one of only 2 known remaining Cordiner’s Emblems in existence! There is an inscription dating from 1696. The inscription reads ‘Behold How Good A Thing It Is, And How Becoming Well, Together Such As Bretheren Are, In Unity To Dwell’. Access to the building is via a security entry system at 70 West Port, and secluded away to the rear of the building are flights of external stairs and balcony walkways leading to the gardens and the modernised individual properties. Cordiner's Land comprises 23 flats and 1 separate house, all privately owned, several of which are available for holiday accommodation.
TRANSPORT: There are major city centre car parks conveniently located close by, but you will not need a car for activities within the city centre. Edinburgh has a first class public transport system and buses and taxis pass the front door if you want to travel further afield, or just need to rest your legs after long days sightseeing!
