CHURCH BAY – PORTH SWTAN
Church Bay and the area nearby is scenic and unspoilt and offers something for anyone wanting a relaxing and peaceful break.
The beach at Church Bay is sandy, backed by a ridge of pebbles and high red cliffs and at low tide flanked on both sides with rock pools - plenty to see and explore to keep young and old entertained. Church Bay has won the Blue Flag Award an accolade that recognises the highest standards of cleanliness, facilities and water qualities.
Coughs, fulmars, buzzards, seals and porpoises are all regularly spotted if you spend some time walking the coastal footpath which runs along the cliff top. Other small beaches and coves can be discovered nearby along the path.
In the Bay one can experience a fascinating step back in time to rural life in Wales circa 1900 by visiting ‘Swtan’ – a fully restored example of a 17th century Welsh cottage with a thatched roof.
The cottage is owned by the National Trust, and is leased and run by a group of local enthusiasts, as a heritage museum preserving history and culture.
EATING & DRINKING
Within a short walk from Pen y Graig is;
The Lobster Pot Restaurant – for lunch, Sunday lunch and evening meals – booking essential
The Wavecrest Cafe – for home cooked lunches, snacks, ices and strawberry-cream teas
The Church Bay Inn – for drinks only (no meals)
All have inside and outside seating. Opening times vary throughout the year.
Church Bay is on the west coast of Anglesey, half way between Holyhead and Cemaes Bay (a good days walk to both) making Church Bay and Pen y Graig an ideal place to stay when walking Anglesey’s 125 miles of coastal footpath. |
